Arthur Russell

I can’t stop listening to Arthur Russell’s World of Echo. He was truly possessed by some higher force, opened himself up, and out came these live performances. Like Stravinsky said: “I was the vessel through which The Rite [of Spring] flowed”. This album is a transcript of what happens when you free your body and mind up to the powers and they speak through you.

Arthur Russell must’ve been an enigma – the biographies we see sure point to that. Started composing and improvising at The Kitchen in New York mid 70s, came out and rocked the DJ dance floor producing tracks under the name Dinosaur with early 80s downtown scene luminaries, wrote some amazing rhythm-fused pop and country tunes, then this in 1986. I highly suggest Wild Combination, a doc on him. He was all over the place. We lost him to AIDS in 1992.
